Filth Podcast series

Although widely regarded as a member of the true A-list of dance music, both in terms of production, DJing and label management, it was a chance meeting led to Anthony Middleton and Luca Saporito, an audio engineer/musician and working dj respectively, becoming Audiofly back in 2002.

Middleton was, in typical boffin style, experimenting with live surroundsound while Saporito was acting as in-house music selector at prestigious London store Selfridges but the pair decided to down tools and throw everything at their shared love of house music.

A bold move, but one which immediately began to pay off. The Audiofly name started to crop up regularly in the London scene and beyond via a series of edits, remixes and releases for underground imprints such as Fantastic House and Deleted. This initial hype led to Peace Division and DC10 resident Clive Henry to request an EP for the now legendary Low Pressings imprint.

This EP, entitled “Release Yourself” caught many an ear and coupled with the DJs growing reputation as DJs, propelled Audiofly to a new level.
Fairly quickly the pair’s groovy, melodic and undulating take on house music started to create a huge fan base, both in the press (DJ Magazine featured the duo on a special covermount CD), in clubs (Space Ibiza residency) and finally in production, with uber-imprints Get Physical, Mood Music, Kickboxer and Renaissance calling on their talents.

Now, the duo are pushing their sound even further with a gig diary that takes in the likes of Fabric, Warung, Amnesia and countless other world
reknowned clubs as well as a forthcoming album in the works but they still finding time to develop other artists via their own Supernature imprint.
Only one year old, and Supernature has been a launch pad for artist such as Ali Nasser, Alex Niggeman, Bearweasel, Amelie and Boris Horel and commands the respect of labels ten times its age while their Flying Circus parties have become the highlights of both the WMC and Sonar festivals and their similarly named radio show for Proton Radio is a continued success.
All of this sounds a lot, but Luca and Anthony are veritable steam trains of ideas and projects. Luca’s unrivalled enthusiasm, Anthony’s ability to think outside the box and an envious amount of talent to draw on mean there’s a lot more to come from Audiofly and their “Familia”.

Well, its a been a few month since our last Podcast, but we are back with another exclusive mix from our 5th Birthday guests, Inland Knights.

Dj’s, Producers and label owners, Andy Riley and Laurence Ritchie AKA Inland Knights hail from Nottingham UK, a city with a rich musical legacy, particularly for house music.

They met in ’93 and cut their teeth DJ’ing for Smokescreen, the renegade soundsystem from which they drew their early inspiration. Smokescreen consisted of dj’s, lighting people, sound people, a truck, a P.A, a generator and general helpers. Old warehouses, woodland, fields, quarries and houses were utilised with the sole intention of having a good time…. for free! By the mid 90’s smokescreen could guarantee a crowd of hundreds in attendance at their parties, and their club nights became local institutions that ran for years with packed dancefloors, and still do to this day!.

By ’98 Laurence and Andy had made the inevitable step into production and the same year the Dropmusic label was born with the release of ‘Inland Knights vol 1’. As Inland Knights Riley and Ritchie undertook a busy schedule in the studio to write tracks for Drop (almost all of the early output was entirely Inland knights, despite many monikers).

Dropmusic has gone on to become one of the most highly regarded house labels in recent years(with 60 plus releases to date), and Inland knights have gone on to become one of the most respected production outfits in the house world, regularly taking on remix duties for fellow labels and producers. Highlights include the accliamed ‘Mohammed Ali’ remix for Faithless on Cheeky Records, cd compilations and remixes for NRK and Om Records, Inland Knights first full length album entitled ‘Creative Spaces’, and more recently Inland Knights album to mark 10 years of Dropmusic entitled ‘Dust till Dawn’.

Currently, as well as remix and production commitments, the pair maintain a busy international Dj ‘ing shedule, and can be found most weekends playing somewhere in the UK or Europe, as well as regular visits to the U.S, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Andy also records under the Toka Project pseudonym, and Laurence under the alias Larry Fives.

Who is he and where does he come from?

A Leeds based dj/producer that’s no stranger to the dance scene. Having given up on a very successful dj/producing career over 3 years ago, “Hot since 82” took time out to relax and start to love the dance music scene again.

We caught up with him recently to explain why?

“I just wasn’t feeling the music anymore! I was rocking up at clubs and just playing music, no emotion, no creativity, it was just work. I had to take time out.

3 years later “Hot Since 82” is born! New sound, new studio and a whole new generation of underground raver's keen to download and dance to the sound.

“Let it ride” was the first to dominate the ears of avid underground house music lovers. With its bad bass line to the catchy vocal hook line that just won’t go away. Reaching number 3 on the deep house charts and being charted from everyone from Dj T, Audiofly, Solomon, Pete Tong, Joris Voorn to name a few.

Cubiq consists of two producers/DJs from Oxfordshire; Carlos Posada and Jamie Jay. They share a passion for house, techno, minimal and other dance genres. They use extensive MIDI controllers live to try and 'bridge the gap' between DJ sets and live sets. They have played many festivals this yearsuch as; Glade, Gottwood, Wakestock, Truck and Underhill on top of a wide range of club nights throughout the UK including 'Annie Mac presents'. They now have a residency at 'Filth' at 'The Warehouse' (Leeds) supporting the likes of Kerri Chandler, Tim Green and Maya Jane Coles in the winter of 2011.

Their debut EP 'Say' (with guest vocals from actor Sebastien de Souza) is to be released off 'The Hidden Label'sometime in winter 2011. Expect big things from Cubiq over the next 12 months

For our 6th Podcast in the series, our Sept 10th Headliner @ The Warehouse, Martinez has recorded you an exclusive 60 minute mix.

Martinez, by birth Martin Swanstein, was born in 1981 and raised in the southernmost part of Sweden. At an early age he discovered techno and house music. Since he already played various instruments it was a natural progression to begin producing music himself. He also got into DJing and started hunting down techno records and got into mixing. At this time Martinez was too young to attend clubs, so instead he arranged his own techno & house parties on the beach just on the seaside of Helsingborg, with himself and friends as DJ's.

Some years later, a demo tape earned him the opportunity to develop his production skills in the Wrong Steps studio in Stockholm, where he co-produced some of his own tracks together with the French producer Manuel Perez. Since Martin at this time still went to school the work had to be scheduled for the holidays. One of these early tracks later appeared as “Late Night Groove” on Martin's debut 12" on the Swedish label Deeplay Music.

In 2000 Martinez moved from his small Swedish hometown to the more open musical climate of the Danish capital, Copenhagen. This encouraged him to put even more time and energy into his music productions and not long after this he landed a record deal with the renowned Guidance label in Chicago. First out was the “Laidback Grooves EP” with it’s mix of Deephouse and Broken Beats and two more were to follow.

As mentioned above, Martinez's debut 12" was released on Deeplay Music and he’s also made some wonderful remixes for the Physics duo of the same label. “Aquarium Jazz Dub Mix” on “Don’t Deny Me Love” was a particular success among fans, DJ’s, and reviewers alike. Other remix work includes Danish pop/house act Filur as well as Dalminjo, Silicone Soul, The Beard, Holmes ft. Dragonfly, Jussi Pekka, Dibaba, Spiro Projecto and later Underworld. His remix of Nathan Fake's “The Sky Was Pink” was a big hit in the DJ world.

Martinez's sound begun in the deeper & jazzier fields of electronic music. In the middle of 2003 Martinez began to feel a stronger passion for the techier and more experimental sounds of house music. He started to work more with samples and electro-based sounds as well as introducing something he's coined as "Cosmic House" - a spacey house sound mixing up tech, atmosphere and colourful melodies.

Not long after this Martinez received a call from Steve Bug interested in a release on his deep/tech house imprint, Dessous Recordings. This resulted in the "Skywalker EP”, which didn't disappoint and inspired a whole new side to Martinez's music, edgier and more twisted.. the more so the better!

In the summer of 2004 Martinez launched his own label, Out of Orbit Recordings, which has been a platform not only for his own music, but for his friends too: Trentemoller had a huge success with Beta Boy/orb003 and Zvukbroda, Nima Gorji, Robert Babicz, Jussi Pekka & Robert Leiner have also released material.

Martinez has also released two tracks on the Berlin based Get Physical label. In 2005 “Shadowboxing” came out on Steve Bug's new imprint, Audiomatique Recordings. In November that year, Martinez also released a vinyl only album called “Internal Space” on his Out of Orbit imprint. It was praised and played by Sven Väth, John Digweed and Loco Dice to name a few.

Towards the end of 2006 Martinez's music taste and productions began to develop in new directions again and he ventured deeper into his love for the minimalistic techno oriented sounds. More stripped down and focused on fewer sounds. After a while in the studio experimenting with this sound he launched a new label called: “Re:connected”, an output for Martinez's more minimal and techno oriented productions. Martinez's first two releases on Re:connected exploded and were highly supported by major international DJ’s such as: Richie Hatwin, Ricardo Villalobos, Sven Väth, Loco Dice and Miss Kittin. 2007 witnessed the continual success of productions in this vein. And his inspiration in this vein has been so overflowing that he will already release his second full length album, "A Chemical Imbalance" in November. This release is a modern techno album with influences of ambient, Dub early Deep House, influenced by his love for the label Guidance.

From that point on Martinez’ releases developed more and more towards Minimal Techno, until in 2008 when he returned to a more housy style, kicking off with his release “Momowha”. Within the same year he was asked to remix Miss Kittin’s track “Grace”, for her label “Nobody’s Bizzness”. Finally, in 2010 Martinez released his third album “The Paradigm Shift” on Moon Harbour Recordings. On this album Martinez rides the perfect balance between Dancefloor and Chillout tunes. Mainly influenced by Chicago House, "The Paradigm Shift" also covers Techno, Breakbeat and dubby Downtempo sounds.

Martinez also has great deck skills and this, along with impeccable taste, has given him a strong DJ reputation worldwide. He's often seen in the booths of various quality clubs and parties around the globe. He’s played together with major DJ's such as Michael Mayer, Miss Kittin, Guido Schneider, Onur Özer, Loco Dice & Sven Väth, in clubs such as Weetamix in Geneva, Amnesia & Space in Ibiza, Nitsa in Barcelona, Cocoon in Frankfurt and Panorama Bar in Berlin to name a few.

Cast out in sheer disgust our quirky ways were just too extreme for the world in which we resided. Scratching our heads and pondering our destiny, we set off in search of a new world, one where the boundaries of the modern world could be distorted & manipulated.

We landed in the world of the nocturnal! A place like no other, where music was the religion and not sleeping was the way of the cloth!! In this new place we found our purpose, our drive and our desire.

We cast away our desks and embraced our decks, our task to wake the robotic masses from their slumber and unite them in a paean of music and good times!

On our travels we claimed asylum on Planet Filth, of star system Leodis. A misty, red nocturnal planet full of life & some very expressive creatures. It is here that we found our home. Better educated, yet still as daft as ever, we continue our quest into the future, entertaining the masses & delivering musical delight to the whole galaxy!!

If you love your clubbing and are partial to a bit of a boogie then we cordially invite you to come and join us, the Pharoh desires Jack Daniels more than all of the gold in Egypt & Chewbacca will let out a growl of happiness if plied with Bombay Sapphire; failing that buy us a Kebab at the end of the night, we will love you forever!!!!

At 25 and with a career spanning 8 years there's not much Leeds based DJ Luke Pompey hasn't already achieved. He graced the decks at Ibizan super club Cream Amnesia at just 18 years old then 2 years later supported Tiesto when Galaxy FM invited him to play Privilege. He's played to crowds in excess of 5000+ alongside nearly every big DJ on the planet and had his productions supported by the likes of Erick Morillo, Carl Cox, Lee Foss, Soul Clap and Pete Tong who played his remix of Dennis Ferrer's "Hey Hey" on the Radio 1 essential selection..... The List goes on!

Residing in Leeds, home to the UK's most vibrant clubbing scenes, he holds the residency for the cities leading House brand FILTH, one of the most import DJ rolls in the city. Playing for FILTH has seen him warm up for the scene's biggest names and offered some amazing opportunities playing back2back with both The Martinez Brothers & Style of Eye to name a few and touring the brand at Festivals such as Glade, Glastonbury, Creamfields & Secret Garden Party.

Luke's enthusiasm, professionalism and complete commitment to what he does are cementing his reputation in the North and across the UK. In an era where it is notoriously hard to stand out from the crowd Luke prides himself on his own passion and energy during his sets. His definitive sound can be described as an array of upfront electronic house music, always keeping things current. He has a knack for being able to cater for any dance-floor at any time, which is what makes him versatile as a resident, if you've seen him play you'll know.

As he continues his onslaught with no sign of slowing down the futures looking very bright for this young Northern phenomenon. It's clear from the reaction he receives wherever he plays that Luke is destined to be one of the industry’s major players.

Originally from New Zealand, now living in Berlin, Emerson’s unique style of jacking deep & groovy house music has made its way onto Cocoon, Get Physical and Upon You Records to name but a few. Over the many years he has been involved in the scene (largely in Australia) he has been flown all over the world to play places like Panorama Bar, Fabric and WMC, and has also had his works licensed to the likes of Get Physical for their 8th Anniversary compilation last year: We are extremely excited to have him as our guest with Hector Couto on Sat April 9th @ Mint Club, Leeds.
